Popular Destinations in Falkland Islands
Stanley
Stanley, located on East Island, is the capital of the Falkland Islands.
Many of the city’s pristine wood clad homes are built on a north-facing
slope to capitalize on exposure to the sun. These homes are painted in
vivid colors, feature corrugated iron roofs, and offer views of the scenic
Stanley Harbor. Tourists can enjoy the very British essence of the city,
which features iconic red phone boxes and a lot of old inns. Tourists can
spend a pleasant day exploring the streets on foot, seeing many military
and marine monuments, the Victorian police station, and municipal buildings
such as the court buildings and the post office. Other major highlights of
Stanley include the Jubilee Villas, constructed in 1887 for Queen
Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, the Tabernacle (a Victorian church), and the
150-year-old Colonists' Cottages on Pioneer Row. Stanley also offers
excellent shopping for woolens and leather goods. After exploration of the
city, tourists can enjoy dining at one of the harbor side restaurants or
cafes.
Volunteer Point
Volunteer Point, located about two hours of drive by sometimes bumpy road
from Stanley, is an excellent place to enjoy some unforgettable wildlife
watching. The major attraction here is the king penguins. About 1,200
breeding pairs live in this area. Some other native wildlife includes white
bridled finches and steamer ducks, as well as sea lions. In order to make
the most of a visit, tourists can check out one of the well-organized tours
of Volunteer Point.
South Georgia Museum
Originally established as a whaling museum in 1991, the South Georgia
Museum has since expanded to embrace the history of the island. The museum
is in a 1916 whaling station manager's house constructed by whalers from
Norway. South Georgia Museum includes captivating displays unfolding the
discovery and exploration of the island, whaling, sealing, its natural
history, and maritime history. The museum also organizes exhibits based on
the Falklands War and the British military presence.
