Phnom Penh, located on the banks of the Tonle Sap and Mekong River, is the capital and most populous city in Cambodia. It has been the national capital since the French colonization of the country. The city was once known as the 'Pearl of Asia'. A large amount of the tourist attractions in the city make the tourists know about the rich history and illustrious cultural heritage of the city.
Independence Monument
An iconic landmark located in the heart of the city, Independence Monument is locally known as Vimean Ekareach. It is an impressive monument signifying Cambodia's liberation from French. Festivities of national festivals such as Independence Day (9th November) and Constitution Day (24th September) are organized at this monument.
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
Formerly Tuol Svay Pray High School, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum was turned into torture, interrogation, and execution centre by the Khmer Rouge regime. The classrooms of the school were alienated into tiny cells. Nowadays, this site is used as a museum that also puts on display around 6000 evocative portraits of the prisoners for guests to know about the tragic history of Cambodia.
Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda
Located next to each other, Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda span about 174870 square meters of greenery and captivating Khmer architecture. The king of Cambodia still lives in the Royal Palace. Visitors can traverse several buildings within the palace that encompasses Moonlight Pavilion and the Throne Hall. The admission to the Silver Pagoda is free of cost and visitors can visit the Emerald Buddha that dates to the 17th century.
