Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United
States. It is situated on the James River in the central part of the state
and is famous for its indispensable role in the American Civil War.
Richmond served as the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War and
was the scene of several battles during a period of five years when the
Civil War was at its peak. Richmond was burnt to ground by the retreating
Confederate Army, thus destroying most of its architectural and historical
buildings. The remaining ones and the ones that were reconstructed today
tell a beautiful story of that bygone era and all that the city has braved
through.
