Uruapan is strategically located at the western end of the Purepecha Highlands. It is the second largest city in Michoacan state of Mexico and was the capital of the state during French Intervention. Uruapan was conquered by Spaniards in 1522 and played a significant role in the War of Independence. The historic city center is lined with elegant colonial buildings which have Moorish elements. Uruapan is divided in six neighborhoods which have a distinct vibe of their own. The city has always been an economic hub and a popular region for growing avocados.
