Dakar
The capital city of Senegal, Dakar is an Atlantic port on the Cap-Vert
peninsula. The city is famous for its stunning buildings, markets, museums,
and beaches. The traditional Medina quarter of the city is home to the
Grande Mosquee featuring a towering minaret. History buffs should visit the
Musee Theodore Monod that exhibits the cultural artifacts including drums,
clothing, tools, and carvings. Dakar’s eclectic nightlife is stirred by the
local mbalax music. Art lovers can visit the Village des Arts that is home
to artists’ workshops and a gallery. Maison des Esclaves Museum, located on
the pristine harbor island of Ile de Goree, introduces tourists to the
history of the African slave trade. Tourists can enjoy surfing at northern
beaches like Yoff and can also enjoy diving around the Ile de Ngor island.
Lake Retba, flowing in the northeast of the city, is famed for its
pink-tinted water.
Saint-Louis
A city on the northwest coast of Senegal, Saint-Louis is famed for its
colonial architecture. An excellent place to visit for history buffs, the
Musee du CRDS puts on display the historical artifacts and art. Located
near the museum, the sandy Langue de Barbarie peninsula houses the fishing
village of Guet N’Dar. In the south of the city are the sandy beaches of
Hydrobase. In the northeast of Saint-Louis are the wetlands of the Djoudj
National Bird Sanctuary that lures migratory birds such as African
spoonbills and purple herons, as well as crocodiles, manatees, and
flamingos.
Saly
Saly is a beach resort area located in the Petite Cote region of Senegal.
The city was a former Portuguese trading post. Saly is home to several
tourist attractions including beaches, restaurants, and bars. Saly Nord, in
the west along the coast, is home to a palm-lined beach, a craft market,
and the Golf de Saly Golf Course.
