Unguja
Also known as Zanzibar Island, Unguja is the main island in the Tanzanian
archipelago of Zanzibar. The old trade center of the island features
mosques and winding lanes. History lovers can visit the House of Wonders
which a former sultan’s is is palace and can also explore the Old Fort
which now features a stone amphitheater and a cultural center. Darajani
Market is the place in Unguja where locals gather to buy produce, seafood,
and spices. Architecture lovers must visit the Anglican Cathedral located
on the site of an old slave market. Located off Stone Town, Murogo and
Pange islands are famous for their dive sites and coral reefs. In the
southern part of the island, Kizimkazi’s beaches are home to bottlenose
dolphins. An excellent place to visit for wildlife lovers, Jozani Forest
Reserve offers a natural habitat to red colobus monkeys and other
indigenous wildlife. Located in the farther south of the island, Zanzibar
Butterfly houses netted tropical garden boasting native butterfly species.
Kilimanjaro National Park
Mount Kilimanjaro National Park is one of the most frequented attractions
in the country. The park is home to Africa's highest mountain peak. Mount
Kilimanjaro National Park, unlike other parks in northern Tanzania, is not
visited for the wildlife but for enjoying the imposing views of this
majestic snow-capped mountain and many come here to climb the summit. One
can climb Mount Kilimanjaro at any time in the year, however the best
period is from late June to October. Kilimanjaro is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site and was formed over 1 million years ago by volcanic eruption along the
Rift Valley.
Serengeti National Park
Serengeti National Park includes a vast treeless plain with millions of
animals in quest for fresh grasslands. It is the largest national park in
Tanzania and attracts thousands of tourists every year. December and June
are the best months for wildlife viewing in the park. The annual migration
of millions of wildebeest and zebra takes place in May and early June. The
annual migration of birds in the park is one of the most impressive natural
events around the world and the primary attraction for many tourists. Large
groups of antelope as well as leopard, lion, hyena, cheetah, hunting dog,
jackal, and bat eared fox are also found in the park. Around 500 species of
bird have been recorded on the Serengeti, among which many are attracted to
the swamp area.
