Kigali
Kigali is the capital of Rwanda. The city is located roughly in the center
of the country. Kigali stretches across several ridges, valleys, and hills,
and features a vibrant nightlife and culinary scene. History lovers touring
the city must visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial that document 1994 mass
killings in the civil war in the country. Caplaki Crafts Village in Kigali
boasts stalls selling traditional handicrafts, encompassing woven baskets
and woodcarvings. The Presidential Palace Museum offers visitors an insight
into the president's life and exhibits parts of the ill-fated jet in which
the president was shot. The Natural History Museum, located in the former
residence of German pioneer Dr. Richard Kandt, is devoted to native plants
and animals. Inema Arts Center in Kigali showcases contemporary African
sculptures, installations, and paintings. The city is also used by tourists
as a jumping-off point for excursions to Volcanoes National Park, famed for
its resident mountain gorillas.
Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park is in the Virunga Mountains surrounded by lush
forests. Virunga Mountain acts as a border of the Democratic Republic of
Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. Tourists come on a tour here to meet the
mountain families or see the mountain gorillas.
Gisenyi
Gisenyi is a town located on the north shore of Lake Kivu. Several beach
resorts are located on the lake’s sandy waterfront. Tourists can enjoy
kayaking in the clear waters of the lake. From the town, the lakeside Congo
Nile Trail traverses through hilly terrain, waterfalls, tea and coffee
plantations, and passing villages.
