The American town of Massena in New York derives its name from a decorated Marshall of French Army who had served Napoleon Bonaparte during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-15). This scenic 18th century town was famous for its health spas during its early days and this trademark identity can be best explored in the Massena Springs village. It is famous for its mineral water springs (or sulfurous spring water) and is situated along Raquette River. Massena’s scenic beauty has remained a constant all throughout, and its crowning glory goes by the name of the Barnhardt Island. The island is home to the Robert Moses State Park and offers a host of recreation activities like camping, trailing, hiking and picnicking etc.
Robert Moses State ParkThe Robert Moses State Park is a 2322 acre state park in Barnhart Island in the Saint Lawrence River near Massena. It is home to a beach, some picnic tables with pavilions, a playground, a nature trail, hiking trails through woods and wetlands, fishing hotspots, a boat launch and marina, a campground with tent and trailer sites, cabins, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling amidst some picture-perfect natural beauty.
Massena MuseumMassena Museum is home to an extensive collection of historical and cultural artifacts related to the town. Of special note here are Massena yearbooks, old deeds and wills, poll tax and ledger (1920-1922), History of 60th Regiment of NYS Volunteers by Richard Eddy, St. Lawrence Co. War Records, information on war veterans, 1944 earthquake damage tours and numerous historical photos of Marshal Andre Massena, Massena Fire Company and the Flood of 1917.
