Luanda
The capital of Angola, Luanda is a port city located on the west coast of
Southern Africa. The city is home to a seafront promenade “Marginal”
running alongside Luanda Bay. Located near the promenade is a
well-preserved 16th-century Fortress of Sao Miguel housing Museum of the
Armed Forces. This fort in an excellent place to visit for history lovers
and offers views of the harbor. Ilha do Cabo, another great place to visit
for tourists, is a peninsula in the bay that houses beaches, restaurants,
and bars. Located behind the Marginal, the Baixa de Luanda district boasts
Portuguese colonial architecture. Nature lovers can head towards Mussulo
Peninsula known for its beaches or can go farther south where Quicama
National Park feature native animals such as antelopes and elephants.
Parque Nacional de Kissama
Parque Nacional de Kissama is located just at a 70 kilometers ride from
Luanda. It is a wildlife sanctuary that protects and conserve several
African species. The park started as a nature reserve in 1938 and later
evolved into a National Park in 1957. Its population of elephants, buffalo,
and sea turtles is increasing. Parque Nacional de Kissama even received 10
Elephants by air-mail from Russia in 2000.
Benguela
Benguela is a city in western Angola on a bay of the same name. It is a
significant tourist hub in the country. City’s early economy was based on
mining and then the slave trade to Brazil and Cuba. Today, tourism is
actively encouraged in the city and an international railway is located
nearby. Benguela’s main tourist attractions are its beautiful ocean-side
location coupled with stunning Portuguese architecture.
