Pretoria National Botanical Garden
Located in Pretoria, the Pretoria National Botanical Garden is one of the nine National Botanical Gardens in South Africa. It was established in 1946 and is spread across 76 hectares. This iconic garden hosts three main institutes - National Herbarium, Biodiversity Center and Environmental Education Center- owing to its remarkable range of flora diversity. The western section of the Pretoria National Botanical Garden mainly comprises a wetland and five different types of gardens, including a medicinal one.
Voortrekker Monument
The Voortrekker Monument is a 40-meter high square granite structure placed on a hilltop in Pretoria. It was erected to commemorate the Voortrekkers (a Dutch term to designate Boer pastoralists) who had left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854. The Voortrekker Monument was inaugurated on 16 December 1949 and had then cost a princely sum of GBP 360000.
National Zoological Gardens of South Africa
The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa (also known as the Pretoria Zoo) in Pretoria is the national zoo of South Africa and is the largest among all zoos in the country. It was founded in 1899 and is spread in 85-hectares, nearly half of which is situated on relatively flat ground and the rest is located on a hill slope. These two parts are separated by the Apies River that runs through the zoo and serves as the most vital source of water for the extensive flora and fauna here. The National Zoological Gardens is home to a large number of animal species.
Freedom Park
Freedom Park in Pretoria is home to a memorial glorifying South Africa’s struggle for independence. It also includes the names of civilians, soldiers and statesmen who had laid down their lives in the World Wars and the Apartheid era. This iconic monument is located atop Salvokop Hill in Pretoria and is dotted on its inside with several displays and exhibits related to the South African history. An impossible to miss attraction here is the Wall of Names (upon which are inscribed the names of all those who had laid down their lives in previous wars), the Gallery of Leaders (that presents an interesting overview of South Africa freedom fighters) and an eternal flame.
