The Medellin Botanical Garden is a greenbelt area in the heart of the city. It is spread on nearly 40 acres of area. The garden is dedicated to orchids, plants, botany, and more. Available here are flora native to Colombia. The garden boasts over 5000 individual plants with contributions from more than 1000 different species. The people in the city gather in the Medellin Botanical Garden for activities like biking, hiking, and for various water activities including canoeing & rowing. The San Pedro Cemetery is located north of downtown Medellin and can be accessed easily by taking the Metro to the Metro Station Hospital. The cemetery was originally built in 1842 and officially became designated as a museum in 1998. It was declared a national monument in 1999 by Colombia. The hallowed grounds have become quite popular in the last few years and have sparked renewed interest from groups who routinely gather at the site for various activities that range from school field trips and art exhibitions to full moon night tours. It also serves as the final resting place to some of Colombia’s most influential and historical figures like Fidel Cano, Pedro Nel Ospina, Mariano Ospina Rodriguez, Pedro Justo Berrio, Luciano Restrepo Escobar, and more.
The city of Medellin, Colombia, was the first city in the entire South America to have a computer controlled planetarium. The Medellin Planetarium (officially Jesus Emilio Ramirez Planetarium) opened its doors for public on 10th October, 1984. The entire project was developed by the Astronomical Society College of San Jose under the leadership of Daniel Julian Gonzalez Patino (a renowned scientist, astronomer, & botanist of the country). Resembling a parked spacecraft, the sustainable and permanent structure was designed to encompass the area as much as the discipline of astronomy. The auditorium at the Medellin Planetarium also serves as a space to hold exhibits that are attended by international and national scholars that come from various educational fields including quantum physics and molecular biology.
The House Museum is one of the most important cultural tourist attractions in Medellin. It was established on November 15, 1975 by the Gomez family in order to preserve the cultural heritage of the scholar and artist as well as his important works of art. Maestro Gomez is one of Latin America’s most famous and well known artists and is widely considered a pioneer of modern art in Colombia. At the time of his death in 1984, he donated his studio/house in Medellin to the city to be used as a museum.
