Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
‘Lavra’ was an honorable term used to designate and differentiate important monasteries from other monasteries. Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (implying Kiev Monastery of the Caves in English language) is one of the oldest monasteries in the city founded in 1051 AD and is focally known for its mummified monks and an underground church.
St. Sophia's Cathedral
Founded in 1011 AD, St Sophia's Cathedral is the oldest remaining church in Kyiv. It was converted into a government-owned museum in 1934 and has been operating as such since then. This 1000 year old cathedral has played a silent witness to all the highs and lows of the state, especially a 17th century revolution and the Second World War. St. Sophia's Cathedral has the world’s biggest collection of frescoes and mosaics, central to which is the Virgin Orans mosaic and some of the mosaics that date back to 11th century. Some other attractions at the cathedral include a 360-degree view of the city at the bell tower and a statue Coassack war hero Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, who liberated Kyiv from Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th century.
St. Michael's Monastery
St. Michael's Monastery is located close to St. Sophia's Cathedral along Dnieper River and is dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel. It was originally built in 1113, demolished by Soviet authorities in 1991 and was rebuilt in 1999. This riverside monastery also comprises the Refectory of St. John the Divine (1713 AD), the Economic Gates (1760 AD) and the monastery's bell tower (1716 AD). St. Michael's Monastery is hallmarked by its seamless integration of Ukrainian Baroque and Byzantine architectural styles.
Maidan Nezalezhnosti (or Independence Square)
Maidan Nezalezhnosti is the central square of Kiev. It is best known as the site of Ukrainian Independence Movement in 1990, Orange Revolution in 2004 and a civil unrest called Euromaidan in 2013. It got its current name after Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Maidan Nezalezhnosti’s traditional appearance comprising of fountains is now seconded by some remarkable monuments devoted to Ukrainian goddess Berehynia, city’s founders (Kyi, Schek and Khoryv), city's patron saint Archangel Michael and a folklore hero (Cossack Mamay).
