Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Jacksonville’s Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a proud reminder of the supreme sacrifice by soldiers of US armed forces that had served during the Vietnam War. One of the largest memorials of its kind in the country, you would find it a glorious sum of an entry wall, a French design bridge and a glass wall on which are etched the names of fallen soldiers. Another attraction here is a fountain that spews colorful jets representing five different branches of US armed forces.

The Beirut Memorial

It was an early morning of 23 October 1983 when a suicide bomber had rammed his truck, full of explosives, in the US Marines headquarters in Beirut (Lebanon). The Beirut Memorial in Jacksonville is a painful reminder of the death of 241 American peacekeepers (including 220 Marines and 3 soldiers) who lost their lives as a consequence. The Memorial is hallmarked by a bronze statue of a soldier and bears the inscription ‘They came in peace’ followed by a mention of the fallen soldiers of the mishap.

Lynnwood Park Zoo

Lynnwood Park Zoo is the only animal exhibiting facility in Onslow County. This nearly three decades old zoo is home to over 80 exhibits including several species of reptiles, birds, and mammals. You wouldn’t like to miss out a touch-station that offers children a chance to interact with smaller animals and reptiles safely.

The Pelletier House

The Pelletier House is the oldest standing structure in Jacksonville. This Greek revival house was built by the city’s founder, Rufus Ferrand Pelletier across the New River in 1850. It was originally a part of a turpentine lot that was owned by Rufus Pelletier and his brother.
