Alcazar de Colon
Alcazar de Colon is amongst the most famous attractions in the city of Santo Domingo. Initially the palace was home to Diego Columbus, the then governor and son of Christopher Columbus. The palace also served as headquarters for ruling Spanish colonies - Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Peru, Colombia, Jamaica, and Guatemala. The palace is an amazing example of beautiful Spanish colonial architecture. At present the palace serves as a museum and exhibits a large collection of late Medieval and Renaissance art. The collection includes artifacts, sculptures and furniture made out of wood, depicting the life-style during colonial rule.
Museo de la Atarazana
Museo de la Atarazana was initially a customs office and a warehouse. Later on, it was converted into a marine archeology museum. Today, this museum is amongst the most visited tourist attractions in Santo Domingo. The museum is home to several artifacts and shipwrecks from Spanish rule. It also displays treasure - silver bars, gold coins, and pewter plates, from a ship that sank during a hurricane in 1500s.
Cathedral Primada de America
The construction of the cathedral began in the year 1514 and continued till 1540. The cathedral's architecture comprises Gothic and Plateresque styles. Its artworks include paintings and sculptures.
Jardin Botanico Nacional
The Botanical Garden, Jardin Botanico Nacional, has been well maintained and designed beautifully. In the garden one can witness the vegetation which is native to Santo Domingo and is spread over two square kilometers. One can either explore the garden and its beauty on foot or via electric train. In this botanical garden one can witness several things like flower clock, aquatic plants, orchids, Japanese garden and many more. The Ecology Museum in the garden is a great place to understand and gain information related to the ecosystem, mangroves, pine and cloud forest, and coastal environment.
