A report from the Department of Transportation confirms what you probably already suspected: airlines made a lot of money from baggage fees last year.
In fact, airlines took in over $3.4 billion in baggage fees alone, according to the report. It’s no secret that fees for checked bags have increased in recent years.
As fuel prices began to rise sharply, airlines increasingly turned to bag fees as a source of revenue.
However, the DOT has expressed concern that airlines are not making their bag fee policies clear enough to potential travelers. The department has set an August 23 deadline for airlines to make their bag fees more transparent.
