Travel Footwear for Women

Choosing footwear for trips can be challenging. Of course, bringing the right gear to keep your feet comfortable depends on what you plan on doing during the trip and the climate of the place you’ll be staying. In addition to any “specialty” shoe I might need (hiking boots, for example), I always bring comfortable and versatile footwear that won’t slow me down. One suggestion I always give is to wear your travel shoes a lot before you leave to make sure that they are broken in and comfortable for your trip. Here are three types of shoes that have served me well over my years of traveling.

Cork-Soled Sandals
Sandals with cork soles and leather straps have been my travel go-to footwear for warm locals for years. A personal favorite is the Birkenstock Gizeh – a flattering thong-style shoe that is incredibly comfortable and easy to pack. I have them in black leather and they look great with everything from jeans to long skirts.

Clogs
When it comes to footwear, Nordic countries usually get it right. Wood-soled clogs are great travel shoes for several reasons. They are easy to wear through the airport and remove before you go through security. You can wear them with socks or without, depending on the temperature fluctuations of your travel destination. They are also incredibly versatile; a stylish clog can take you from sightseeing to dinner at a nice restaurant. I’m partial to the style (and comfort) of Sven Clogs.

Flats
A pair of streamlined flats always finds its way into my bag. They are easy to pack and provide a nice (and more practical) alternative to heels for dressier occasions. I either opt for a neutral (I have a pair of nude leather flats that have made many trips with me) or a fun pop of color (red goes well with a variety of outfits – just think how versatile red lipstick is). Some of my favorite brands include Yosi Samra, Rachel Comey, Söfft and Tieks.
