Tokyo will make a bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, according to the city’s governor Shintaro Ishihara.
The announcement comes as Japan continues to struggle with recovery efforts following a devastating earthquake and tsunami that stunned the nation last month.
The city wants to use the bid as a catalyst for recovery. “If we will work hard with hopes for nine years ahead, it will be a big catalyst for our country’s reconstruction and revival,” said Ishihara.
Tokyo lost out on a bid to host the 2016 games back in 2009. Those games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Cities can submit their names for consideration for the 2020 Games until September 1, 2011.
