The Gun pub in East London’s Docklands (near Canary Wharf) has been awarded the title of London’s “Best County Dining Pub of the Year” for the second year by The Good Pub Guide 2013.
Now entering its 28th year, The Good Pub Guide is Britain’s best selling travel guide. Every year the editors of this guide rate the very finest “dining pubs” throughout Great Britain. The award is a mix of results from excellent reader reviews and an anonymous inspection by the guide’s editors.
Among the reasons for The Gun claiming the title for one more year is its long terrace with uninterrupted views the 02 Area across the Thames. Large comfy leather sofas and armchairs, interior elements like a stuffed boar’s head and well stocked bookshelves probably didn’t hurt in the decision. And then there’s the beer and wine: Adnams Bitter and a guest ale from Dark Star and Sambrooks breweries on handpump and several wines by the glass.
But, of course, The Good Pub Guide’s aim was to recognize The Gun as London‘s best dining pub. Good call too. Even a read of the menu is a mouthwatering experience. Roast bone marrow on toast, herb and caper dressing? Yes please! Or how about a beef shin burger with artisanal Cheddar and hand cut chips or dressed Dorset crab with hand cut chips? Decisions, decisions.
The editors at the Good Pub Guide aren’t alone in bestowing The Gun with accolades. Other awards include Number One Riverside Pub in The UK for 2012 by The Times newspaper, Time Out’s Best Gastro Pub 2006/07, Best New Restaurant Award from Hardens and Remy Martin in 2006 as well as The UK’s Best Sunday Lunch by The Publican Magazine in 2007.
The Gun is part of the ETM Group of pubs. Owners Tom and Ed Martin of the group reckon much of this particular venue’s success comes down to the hard work of their staff. Tom Martin says: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this significant award again. With London’s gastropub scene burgeoning, it is a real achievement to have won it two years in a row and a testament to the fantastic kitchen and front of house team we have here at The Gun.”
The Gun is located at 27 Cold Harbour, Isle of Dogs, London, E14 9NS. Visit the pub online.
