This blog post was updated on October 25, 2018.

American travelers in need of a passport will have to fork over a little extra in 2012.

The US State Department has announced passport fee increases across the board. Most notably, the price of passport  application fee will rise 27 percent, from $55 to $70.

A new fee will also be introduced for frequent travelers who require extra pages in their passports. While the State Department used to offer that service for free, it will now cost travelers a whopping $82.

According to a report from MSNBC, the State Department introduced the new pricing plans to cover its global consular services.
