Some Point to Former Navy Base as Solution to NYC Air Traffic

This blog post was updated on October 23, 2018.

Some aviation experts believe they have found a solution to New York City’s chronic air traffic problem.

A former Navy base located across Jamaica Bay from Kennedy Airport could provide the tools necessary to ease traffic loads at JFK and LaGuardia airports, they say.

Floyd Bennett Field, closed since the 1970s, has an existing air traffic control tower and space enough for a runway the length of LaGuardia’s.

Though the base is currently off limits to any air traffic, a new system being installed by the FAA could soon enable planes to land at Bennett without interfering with operations at JFK.
