Minneapolis (Minnesota) is not only a Delta hub, it’s also a theater Mecca. Whether you’re looking for traditional theater productions, experimental theater, or family theater, you’re sure to find it in Minneapolis’ eclectic arts scene.

So, if you find yourself with an extended layover or a holiday break in Minneapolis, check out some of the area theater’s holiday offerings.

Here are some suggestions to get you started. See each theater’s website for specific information on tickets and performance schedules.

A Christmas Carol

Guthrie Theater

For over twenty-five years, Minneapolitan theater-goers have made the Guthrie’s Christmas Carol an annual tradition. With state-of-the art scenery and costumes and impeccable actors, it’s easy to see why. Last year, they started offering a shorter version of the play (without an intermission), perfect for children and families.

La Befana

Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater

Since 1973, Heart of the Beast has been enchanting its audiences with larger-than-life puppets and intricate masks, all designed specifically to assist in the telling of a story. This season, the beloved show La Befana returns to the stage. Based on the ancient legend of the Italian gift giver, La Befana reveals the splendid wonder of common things. It’s a play that is sure to remind you of the deeper meaning of the holidays. Kids of all ages will love the storytelling and puppetry.

Black Nativity

Penumbra Theater

A joyous celebration with music and dance, Black Nativity brings together some of the finest African-American actors, dancers and musicians in the Twin Cities.  It’s a spellbinding performance that communicates messages of joy, hope, victory and freedom.

A Christmas Story

Children’s Theater Company of Minneapolis

The renowned Children’s Theater Company brings the energy and humor of this raucous holiday movie (who could forget the “leg lamp” with fishnet stockings?) to their main stage. Fun for the whole family!
