By day and night, Vienna permanently shines in a light of grandeur and refinement. It is a city of opulent palaces, pristine museum collections and shop windows where the price tags on clothing could pay for small cars. However Vienna is not an untouchable city for those on a budget. It might look too expensive from the outside, but within, Austria’s capital litters with discounts and cheap offers. On airberlin’s European winter tour, I uncovered a few tips and tricks for saving in Vienna.
Experience The Opera For Under €10: With a rich tradition for music, Vienna’s State Opera House glows in the evening hours, filling with those who have forked over a pretty penny to catch a performance. Travelers don’t have to hand over their wallet at the ticket counter. Rather, you can attend the opera in Vienna for under €10. The Vienna State Opera House offers up standing seats. Standing room tickets are sold 80 minutes before curtains time.
Take advantage of Free WiFi: If you need to call home or perhaps answer a few emails while you are in Vienna, you could fork over some of your budget by frequenting an Internet café or paying the hotel’s steep charges for WiFi. However, Vienna would rather have you spend your loose change on a coffee than an Internet connection. The city features Freewave WiFi at a number of places in town. The Austrian WiFi hotspot supplies WiFi to many different places in Vienna, from cafes to tourist attractions like Schönbrunn Palace. The easy and quick connection makes it possible to take in Vienna’s sights and sounds, all while keeping connected and not spending a cent.
Stroll The Schönbrunn Palace Gardens Without Cost: While a ticket inside the glowing Schönbrunn Palace will set you back in price, the grounds are free to roam. Opened to the public in 1779, the Schönbrunn Palace Gardens feature a number of gardens, fountains and more. The grounds of the palace stretch 1.2 kilometers east to west and 1 kilometer north to south. Parents push baby strollers and tourists snap photographs throughout the baroque designed gardens, creating a mixed scene in Vienna. The Schönbrunn Palace Gardens are not just for the tourists to get lost in, but also a sort of local hangout to relax amidst the imperial summer palace.
Appreciate Discounts and Unlimited Transport With The Vienna Card: While some city cards can offer very little to travelers for the price, the Vienna Card is certainly an exception. It features over 210 discounts at museums, concerts, shops and cafes. The card also includes unlimited free travel on the underground, bus and tram for 72 hours. This feature appeals especially in the wintertime in Vienna when the wind hits in dramatic fashion. You can hop on a tram or down to the metro without having to walk in the cold. The card does cost €19.90 euros, but the discounts around town seem endless. Those who purchase the card will receive a book listing all of those price slashes throughout Vienna’s museums, sights, music scene and shopping opportunities.
