Five New York Street Foods Your Kids Will Love

This blog post was updated on July 30, 2021.

There’s no shortage of culinary culture in New York. In fact, you need not go to a 5-star restaurant to experience some of the city’s tastiest treats. Here are five New York street foods your kids are sure to love.

Hot Dogs
Hot dog carts and New York go together like ketchup and mustard. Kids love chowing down on hotdogs piled high with toppings. Is it the most nutritious meal? No, but in New York you can consider it a “cultural experience.” Foodie tip: Try a few different vendors and decide which one is your favorite— just like a real New Yorker.

Falafel
Falafel is a Middle Eastern cuisine is made from chickpeas, parsley and spices, molded into fried balls. The ideal falafel has a crispy shell and tender interior. Typically, the falafel balls are served in a pita along with sauces and toppings. Foodie tip: Check out Taim, whose falafel has consistently been voted best in New York City.

Shaved Ice
Nothing cools down the kiddos in the summer like a cup of shaved ice. If you’re imagining the sugary syrups of your childhood, you should know that the shaved ice scene has evolved quite a bit since then! For a real treat, try Taiwanese shaved ice, which is flavored with condensed milk (or sometimes strawberry, mango or green tea) and topped with sauces and fruit. Foodie tip: Wooly’s Ice serves some of the best Taiwanese shaved ice in the city.

Cupcakes

Over the past five years, cupcakes have become a popular street food in New York and other big cities. A favorite snack amongst the younger set, these sweet treats are as beautiful as they are tasty. Foodie tip: Grab a cupcake from the Little Cupcakelover truck in Greenwich Village.

Tacos
Nothing satisfies hungry travelers like a taco. There are a variety of Mexican taco stands around the city offering a variety of meats and toppings. For something a little different, try a Korean taco, complete with kimchi. Foodie tip: Korilla BBQ has excellent Korean tacos.
