If you’re headed to sunny San Diego anytime soon, be sure to
bring your appetite. This So Cal city has become quite the foodie destination.
There is a crop of relatively new gastro pubs that have sprung up around the
city. If you’re not familiar with the term, a gastro pub (a British creation)
is a bar that serves hearty gourmet fare and often features international beer
or microbrews, difficult to find wines, and craft cocktails. Here are five San
Diego gastro pubs you shouldn’t miss.
Located in San Diego’s East Village, Proper offers a large
selection of beer and wine by the glass, as well as specialty cocktails. Their
menu features international dishes such as curry chips (fries), steamed
edamame, fish tacos and chipotle calamari.
San Diego’s first gastro pub, Jayne’s is located in the
University Heights neighborhood. Inspired by British cuisine, Jayne’s menu is
full of delicious, hearty fare. The Jayne Burger (grilled beef with melted aged
cheddar cheese, garlic aioli, lettuce, and house sweet pickled onions on a soft
sesame bun) is quite popular. Jayne’s features a large selection of
international wines and bottled craft beers, as well as a great selection of craft
cocktails.
Located in Rancho Bernardo, Urge prides itself on being an
American reinterpretation of the traditional English pub (a great place for
sports fans). Urge serves farm-to-table pub foods and boasts an extensive beer
list.
Located in San Diego’s East Village, Knotty Barrel
specializes in locally-sourced food and features a selection of over 100 local,
domestic and imported beers from around the world, including over twenty craft
beers on tap. Knotty Barrel offers one of the best local beer selections in San
Diego.
Located in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, The Hopping Pig
serves affordable, tasty gastro fare and features 32 Draft Beers available on a
rotating schedule include Delerium, Stone, Ballast Point, Green Flash, Chimay,
Lost Abbey, Manzanita, SpeakEasy, AleSmith and more.
Cheers!
