When August arrives, we all know that summer is winding down, but that doesn’t mean that the festivals and celebrating have to come to en end.
August is a great month, all around the world, for those looking to congregate in the name of some city treasure, a certain type of music or just some random quirky love, for perhaps days on end.
So, grab a blanket, a bottle of water, and prepare to start searching for some cheap flights.
These are just a few of the great festivals August has on the menu around the world!
La Tomatina – Spain: La Tomatina is the world’s most popular food fight involving, you guessed it, tomatoes! Each year on the last Wednesday of August, the small town of Buñol becomes overrun with tourists and locals looking to get in on the action of pelting tomatoes at one another. The tomatoes are pre-crushed, thankfully, to help reduce risk of injuries, but a pair of goggles is suggested for keeping the acidity out of your eyes.

Notting Hill Carnival – United Kingdom: The Notting Hill Carnival takes place over two days in August each year on the streets of Notting Hill and surrounds. The festival draws in nearly 1 million people to the area who are looking to experience the thrill of the carnival’s Caribbean flair, lively music and colorful floats. It is a site not to be missed by those that happen to be in London at the right time.
Did you know there is a carnival for every month of the year?
Darwin Festival – Australia: Darwin Festival takes place every August in the Northern Territory capital city of Darwin over the course of 18 filled days. This arts festival features live music performances, art shows, dance and workshops galore, all of which draw in thousands to this otherwise remote Australian city.
Elvis Week – USA: Elvis Week is rightfully located in Memphis, Tennesee at Graceland. This festival draws in Elvis lovers and Elvis impersonators far and wide for live performances, autograph signing (according to the schedule), runs, discussions, and impersonator contests. If you are an Elvis fan, this is definitely the August festival for you.
Edinburgh Fringe Festival – Scotland: The Edinburgh Fringe Festivals takes over the city of Edinburgh each year for three long weeks, providing a number of comedy, theatre and art acts, making it one of the largest in the world. The city becomes the festival during this time, and venues open up in castles, schools, homes and more. Better yet is the ability for anyone and everyone (every type of art and act) to perform at the festival, so you never know what you’ll come across this year if you make it.
