Fans of the TV hit Downton Abbey have long pined to stay in the actual castle at the center of the series, located just west of London. While tours of the Victorian estate have been possible for travelers, Highclere Castle now will offer onsite accommodations, opening up lodging right on the grounds.
The current Earl and Countess of Carnarvon at Highclere Castle have opened up the London Lodge, accommodations set on the grounds of what many TV watchers know of as Downton Abbey. Fans of the series will have to cough up a pretty pence to stay overnight. CNN claims a night stay will set travelers back roughly $545.
Just inside the grounds, the London Lodge boasts foundations in 1793 when the first Earl of Carnarvon saw a need for a grand entrance gate for visitors and family coming to Highclere Castle. Individual lodges flanking the two sides of the gate were added by 1840.
Over the last two years, the current Earl and his wife have restored the lodges. Complete with large windows and traditional lime plaster, the accommodations are intended for two. The London Lodge features a full kitchen, sitting room with wood burning stove, a double bedroom, bathroom and dressing area.
In order to camp out on the Highclere Castle grounds at the London Lodge, guests might have do some searching for available weekends. Bookings are available beginning February 13th, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Super fans of the series should hold their breath if they want to stay at Highclere and have a Maggie Smith sighting in the process. It is believed that the cozy accommodations will not be open during filming of Downton Abbey. In addition to room bookings, travelers can also book special packages to stay at the London Lodge and tour Highclere Castle.
