Continental Airlines was forced to cancel 24 flights Wednesday due to a high number of pilots calling out sick. Most of the cancelled flights originated out of Newark, New Jersey.
It was unclear whether the cancellations highlighted a simple pilot shortage or a unified show of frustration from pilots in the midst of slow labor talks with management.
United Continental formed last year following the merger of United and Continental Airlines. The new company is currently negotiating a new labor agreement with pilots and those talks have hit a slowdown in recent weeks.
However, spokespersons from both the airline and the pilots’ union refused to comment on the nature of Wednesday’s callouts.
