Tomorrow, America will have a new president. Regardless of who you voted for, there’s a chance you’re not going to like the outcome. For some of you, even taking a temporary hiatus away from all the accusations, scandals, and social media spats (especially among your own friends) that might follow would be a welcome respite.
As you’ve dutifully fulfilled your democratic duty to vote, don’t forget that it’s also your right to escape for some R&R. So, we’ve voted on the best places where you can get a well-earned rest, far from the drama that may follow after this election. You’ll be rejuvenated, able to clear your mind, and ready to take on the next four years. Trust us – there’s no flip-flopping on these places!
Cape Breton (Nova Scotia, Canada)
The island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia might be the most welcoming to US citizens post-election. Earlier this year, the island publicly declared that Americans are welcome if they aren’t too pleased with the election results. Drive through the scenic coastal Cabot Trail, detour off the main road for great hiking and kayaking opportunities, and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of quaint and colorful fishing villages.
Panama
While America’s relationship with Mexico may or may not sour post-election, you don’t have to look too far for an affordable Caribbean coastal getaway. Panama is just a few hours flight away, and has long welcomed Americans. You’ll have access to pristine beaches, lush mountains, and a burgeoning arts and music scene to keep you occupied. Plus, if you never want to leave this paradise, becoming a resident is super easy and has plenty of perks (a reasons it’s the #1 place for Americans to retire in 2016!).
Iceland

Just a 5-hour flight away from the US east Coast, Iceland is already a hotspot (in fact, there will be more American tourists in the country than actual residents in 2017!) thanks to its amazing natural beauty that includes fjords, glacier lakes, and out-of-this-world lava fields. Whether its partying in Reykjavik, whale-watching in Husavik, walking the black-sand beaches of Vik, or watching the magical dance of the northern lights in the isolated Westfjords, you’re guaranteed to soon forget all the drama back home.
Peru
With no visa required, getting to the Andean gem that is Peru is made all the more easier. Take in the bustling streets of Quito or the colonial Spanish charm of Cuenca, or marvel at the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. With the friendly people, great food, and favorable exchange rate, you’ll soon be asking “what election?”
Vienna (Austria)
One of Europe’s shining stars, Vienna attracts the romantic in us all with its grand palaces, regal parks, and elegant museums. Whether it’s the amazing opera or its highly rated cuisine, You’ll have weeks of activities lined up in this culturally rich hub. And please – avoid that itch to throw a pie at a politician’s face by burying your own face in a large slice of Sachertorte, the city’s iconic dark chocolate cake.
New Zealand
It might be a long flight away, but New Zealand, particularly its South Island, has one of the world’s most gorgeous and varied landscapes that’s perfect for those craving an election detox. Sheep outnumber humans 12 to 1 – and the people who are there are friendly and welcoming. Plus, the wine is fantastic, the views are spectacular, and comfortable accommodations are plentiful.
Mauritius
Located in the Southern Indian Ocean, the former French colony proves ideal for forgetting about political woes while sinking your toes in its sparkling sands. With a unique mix of African, Indian, and Chinese influences, Mauritius is a place where relaxation and fun go hand in hand. You’ll have plenty to do in the water, especially with scuba diving and snorkeling, thanks to the island being encircled by the world’s longest unbroken coral reef.
