With August just around the corner, you may be thinking that you’re missing out on yet another summer to see Europe in all her glory and will have to drop some serious coin if you want to get there before fall. But don’t despair: there are ways to get the most out of your budget and limit the pain in your pocketbook while hitting the continent in the summertime.

So if you’re gearing up for a last minute trip (or thinking about next year’s travel plans), have a look at this quartet of tips on how to make the most of a summer vacation in Europe…while spending the least amount of money!

Broaden Your Summer Horizons

Part of deciding which summer month is most affordable for your trip to Europe comes down to which months you consider to be part of summer. If you’re in southern Europe during late spring or early autumn, the weather should still be warm enough to find for a dip in the sea but also still early enough to score those fantastically cheap flight deal. You’ll also find you have much of the beach to yourself. Sicily, Sardinia, Crete, Cyprus… Lap up the first or last of the summer sun in style on an island in the middle of the Mediterranean!

Hit the (Out-of-Season) Ski Slopes

What happens at all those ski resorts in the Alps and other European mountain ranges when most of the snow has melted away? Many of the best resorts stay open to welcome a mix of nature lovers and sports enthusiasts with a range of activities like mountain biking and hiking, to make the most of their panoramic settings – at a fraction of the cost of booking a winter break. Look for summer discounts for trips to prime skiing destinations such as France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland and save big!

Hot Town! Summer in the City

If you can take the heat, you can score a deal with a city break at the height of summer in a number of European destinations. As summer temperatures rise in big cities like Madrid, Berlin, and Rome, lots of locals head for the beach to cool down. This is especially true during August. You’ll find all the key attractions remain open anyway and those folks hanging around town for work will be appreciative of your business.

Dig a Little Deeper, Go a Little Farther

For cost savings, cheap flight deals and often a more genuine cultural experience, going one town over or just outside (or nowhere near) a major tourist area can lead to a vacation of fun discoveries. Who knows? You may even stumble upon the next “it” destination while catching a glimpse of real life. Of course, if you must be part of the action in a more popular area, you can always do a day trip. Barcelona too buzzing? Glide over to Girona. London prices too lavish? Stay in the nearby countryside or by the sea and ride the train into town for an urban frolic.

Slow Down and Stay Awhile

Travelling through trains

You can’t get around the high transportation costs of traveling throughout Europe. Regardless of if you’re  traveling by air, Eurail pass, or rental car, these costs will add up if you are insistent about visiting many destinations while on your trip. The more destinations on your itinerary, the more your overall travel costs will rise! If you’ re looking for a value-driven travel experience, you’re better off staying in one or two spots. As a bonus, this will give you the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in this place and culture. Instead of being rushed to cross off the top tourist spots, you will have more time to slow down and spend time at the destination like a local.

Visit Central or Eastern Europe

A trip to Europe should not be limited to top locations such as London, Paris, or Rome. In order to maximize your investment in your trip, you should broaden your horizons and consider visiting Central and Eastern Europe. Destinations such as Poland, Romania, and Hungary are far better choices for budget-conscious travelers. In addition, countries that do not use the Euro also tend to be less expensive. Not only will you save money on transportation costs, but you will see lower prices on lodging, meals, and entertainment. A cheaper destination will give you more flexibility to splurge on more premium meals and other activities, allowing you to make the most out of your travel experience.

Be Savvy About Your Spending on Food

Eating in Paris

While you definitely want to allocate enough money in your budget to fully embrace the glorious cuisines of Europe, there are still ways to be smart about your spending. Avoiding the restaurants in the top tourist areas will automatically lower your food bill. If you want to splurge on a fancy meal, you will likely see lower prices at lunch versus dinner. If you are lucky enough to be staying in a place with a kitchen, be sure to take advantage of the many markets to create your own meal. Lean into the street food and all of the fresh markets that dot the landscape of Europe. This is often where you will find the best food at the most affordable prices.

Plan Your Transportation

Bus & Bikes

It does not take long for the transportation costs to really rack up if you are not careful. Doing your research and planning your transportation options carefully will ensure that you are not spending more than you need to in order to get around. The best way to get around is to simply walk. Not only does this cost nothing, but it also allows you to see more of the destination. Other smart options include public transportation such as busses and subways. Many of these options also offer multi-day passes which will save you even more money. You will naturally spend more if you insist on private options such as Uber or taxis.

If It’s Free, Do It!

One of the best things about booking cheap flights in July to Europe is that you’ll find plenty of free attractions to enjoy during your trip. Many of the top cultural attractions, museums, and parks cost no money to visit. Some museums offer certain days or hours that are free or provided at a discounted rate. The local chamber of commerce and tourism websites often list free festivals and other special events that are happening. Or consider looking into a free walking tour to get you acquainted with your destination. Doing your research before your arrival can pay off big dividends for your budget.
