People over 65 frequently use their retirement savings to indulge in travel. Some look for places that cater to an active lifestyle while others choose a more relaxing experience. There are dozens of amazing worldwide tourist destinations, but short domestic getaways allow seniors to explore multiple destinations in a year.

If you’re retired and looking to rack up some frequent flyer miles, consider one of these five memorable U.S. locations.

Relax on a Barrier Island (Amelia Island, Florida)

Two bridges connect Amelia Island to Florida’s mainland. Jacksonville International Airport is about 30 minutes away, so when your cheap flights in July land, you can get your trip started right away. In addition to strolling along the island’s 13 miles of rarely crowded sand beaches, visitors can hike, bike, and horseback in a state park that covers more than 200 acres of well-preserved wilderness. Golfers of all levels of skill will be challenged by the oceanfront holes and oak-lined fairways. A wide range of accommodations matches the diverse dining experiences.

History Buffs Rejoice (Boston, Massachusetts)

Like most major cities, Boston has its share of fine museums, sporting events, year-round musical and theatrical productions, and seasonal ethnic and cultural festivals. In addition to these features, travelers can explore 50 National Historic Sites or walk The Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile self-guided walking tour of notable sites.

Native American culture and art lure most visitors to this dry and sunny location that has cold winters and hot summers. Out-of-state visitors can catch a flight to Albuquerque and then drive an hour to Santa Fe. Travelers will be drawn to the quaint streets filled with southwestern architecture, historic buildings, and restaurants known for their regional cuisine. Art lovers will head to Canyon Road to see art studios and galleries or visit the plethora of small museums. Others may head to the Santa Fe Botanical Garden or explore Native American culture by driving to one of the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos that are located between Santa Fe and Colorado.

Learn About Wine and Indulge in Fine Dining (Napa Valley, California)

Many San Francisco travelers drive north to Napa Valley to experience its famous wineries and Michelin-star restaurants. Others come for the region’s cultural arts, health spas, and natural beauty. For a scenic drive filled with vineyards, take the less traveled Silverado Trail Road. When you reach Calistoga take a dip into one of the area’s world famous geothermal hot spring pools, admire California’s Old Faithful Geyser, or savor a delicious meal in this rustic town.

Take a Cruise with the Grandkids (Inside Passage, Alaska)

With thousands of miles of coastline, Alaska is a perfect choice for a multigenerational summer trip, especially when it comes to cruises. Be aware that some cruise lines are more kid-friendly than others. The main ports of Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan have excursions that will appeal to both young and old passengers who are interested in Tlingit Indian culture, Gold Rush history, or simply enjoying the Arctic environment. If you’re lucky, you’ll come home with spectacular wildlife pictures.
