San Diego for Superheroes!

San Diego may have been the first place on America’s west coast visited by Europeans, and the envy of all us who’ve had to endure winter (the average temperature is 64°F), but for four days every summer, America’s Finest City (seriously, that’s San Diego’s actual nickname), becomes America’s Nerdiest City during the San Diego Comic-Con International. This year, it’s all going down July 21–24, but before the city gets taken over by mega fans and cosplayers, we thought we’d put together a guide to the city from the perspective of some of our favorite superheroes.

Here are 9 things to do in San Diego that caped crusaders would recommend.

Hero: Superman
Recommendation: Experience human flight at Torrey Pines Gliderport

If there’s a quintessentially classic superhero ability, it’s to soar through the air like a bird or a plane. But unless you’re the last son of Krypton (or the Falcon), you should just head over to Torrey Pines to try out, and even learn how to hang glide, or para-glide solo. Up, up, and awaa-aay!

Recommendation: Get patriotic at the Midway Museum

POW! Of course, the most patriotic superhero of all would want to check out the second life of the USS Midway, America’s longest serving aircraft carrier, which is now the most popular naval museum, not only in San Diego, but in the whole country![/mks_pullquote]

Recommendation: Solve a mystery at Dinner Detective

BAM! Gotham’s great detective is a pretty serious guy, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to have fun. This interactive comedy/murder mystery dinner show let’s you become the audience every Saturday, or you can hire it out for a private show for your own group.[/mks_pullquote]

Hero: Silver Surfer
Recommendation: Learn all about catching a wave at the California Surf Museum

Is there any doubt that the intergalactic being, and Fantastic Four ally known as the Silver Surfer (because he uses a surfboard to travel through space, and not because he was the first senior to surf the web), would suggest heading over to the museum dedicated to preserving the history of surfing? Certainly not.

Recommendation: Bond with the brew-masters at Stone Brewery

SPLAT! There’s only one thing that this member of the X-Men (and beer fan) would want to do on a visit to San Diego, and that’s to check out the region’s largest brewery and maker of the popular drink, Stone Beer.[/mks_pullquote]

[mks_pullquote align=”right” width=”310″ size=”20″ bg_color=”#eded04″ txt_color=”#000000″]Hero: Catwoman
Recommendation: Buy books and pet the cats at the Adams Ave Bookstore

WHAM! If by now you’re tired of all things comic book, then why not tail Selina Kyle to this bookstore, where, after finding the purrfect rare book to read, you can pet one of the store’s famous super cats. (mee-ow)[/mks_pullquote]

Hero: Wonder Woman
Recommendation: Discover some history at the Women’s Museum of California

This Amazonian superheroine’s go-to San Diego destination, without a doubt, would be this area museum dedicated to the state’s female side of history. It’s one of America’s half-dozen women’s museums.

[mks_pullquote align=”left” width=”310″ size=”20″ bg_color=”#dd5858″ txt_color=”#000000″]Hero: Ant Man
Recommendation: Take in the tiny wonders of Legoland

BOOM! The first Legoland outside of Europe is just a short ride away in nearby Carlsbad, and with it’s world of miniature activity based around the popular Danish building blocks, it’s the perfect spot for anyone who’s able to shrink down to the size of an ant.[/mks_pullquote]

[mks_pullquote align=”right” width=”310″ size=”20″ bg_color=”#dd5858″ txt_color=”#000000″]Hero: The Flash
Recommendation: Run at Mission Trails Regional Park

KAPOW! If there’s one thing that Central City’s speedster loves, it’s running. And if there’s one place in San Diego to get your cardio on, it’s this popular running spot. With over 7,000 acres, Mission Trails offers a wealth of different jogging and running routes.[/mks_pullquote]
