More Americans to Travel for Thankgiving this Year

This blog post was updated on October 16, 2018.

More Americans are traveling this year in the U.S. for Thanksgiving. An increase of 11.4 percent from 2009 is expected thanks to a better economy, travel and auto group AAA said on Tuesday.

Close to 42.2 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home, a rise from the 37.9 million Americans that traveled last Thanksgiving.

The anticipated jump comes from an increase in gross domestic product, real disposable personal income and household net worth, combined with a drop in consumer debt, AAA said.

About 12 percent more Americans will drive this year, those flying will increase 3.5 percent, AAA said.

While the rise in travelers is significant in comparison to last year’s negligible 0.2 percent increase, the 4.3 million new travelers are less than half the number that chose not to travel from 2007-2009.
