Hawaii saw a 20 percent increase in visitor spending for the month of January as the tourism industry continues to show signs of recovery.
The island state was helped by the return of the NFL Pro Bowl, which temporarily moved to Miami in 2010.
Overall, Hawaii welcomed 595,487 visitors for the month, a 12.2 percent increase from the previous year.
While tourism officials were pleased with the numbers, they cautioned that the economic recovery remains tenuous at best.
“The sustained momentum is encouraging, but there continues to be many factors that can disrupt recovery of Hawaii’s tourism economy,” said Mike McCartney, president and CEO of the state tourism agency.
He mentioned rising fuel costs and labor disputes as potential setbacks for the state’s recovery.
