UPDATE: There are no reports of casualties following the latest earthquake to strike Japan, according to he National Police Agency. All tsunami watches and warnings have expired.
A tsunami warning was issued by the Japan meteorological agency Thursday night after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the nation’s eastern coast.
The aftershock was one of the most powerful since a 9.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the nation last month.
The newest quake was centered 25 miles under water; about 60 miles from Sendai and 90 miles from Fukushima where workers have been struggling to cool nuclear reactors for weeks.
The Fukushima plant was breifly evacuated but reported no loss of power or major damage, according to the Tokyo Electric Power Company.
In Tokyo, about 215 miles from the epicenter, buildings shook for about a minute, according to early reports.
Officials in the US said there was never any tsunami threat in Hawaii or the West Coast. No warnings or watches were posted there. Japan has been rocked by hundreds of aftershocks since a 9.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the country on March 11. However, very few have been stronger than 7.0.
