Mardi Gras has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean New Orleans is any less active these days.
The carnival atmosphere follows no calendar restrictions in the Big Easy.
This historic city hosts a wide variety of events and festivals throughout the spring and summer.
As the weather heats up, so too does the action in NOLA.
From music to wine to shopping, here is an overview of upcoming May events so you can begin planning your New Orleans getaway.
New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (April 29- May 8, 2011)

This ten-day event is all about good music, food and handicrafts. Don’t let the name fool you— though the majority of the music is jazz/blues/soul/gospel, the festival also welcomes world-class musicians in various genres including rock, folk, zedeco and funk. In addition to these auditory pleasures, there are also hundreds of booths where you can sample regional cuisine and purchase crafts, jewelry and more.
Spring Fling on Magazine Street (May 7, 2011)

Each year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, Magazine Street (one of the city’s premier shopping areas) hosts a “spring fling” event featuring sales, refreshments and live music for participants to enjoy while browsing in the street’s eclectic mix of home goods boutiques, clothing stores, shoe stores, jewelry shops and antique shops.
New Orleans Wine and Food Experience (May 24-28, 2011)
Web:

Located in restaurants, hotels, art galleries, museums, and boutiques throughout the city, this five-day event allows participants to experience the very best of New Orleans’ culinary life. In addition to gourmet meals, wine tastings, classes and seminars, participants can enjoy the Royal Street Stroll, an evening-long exploration of the city’s art, antiques, jazz and (of course) wine. And you can feel good about indulging in fine wine for five days, since the majority of the event’s proceeds go to benefit charity.
