NASA recently announced that it will be sending its fleet of soon-to-be retired shuttles to tourist destinations across the country.
After completing its final mission in March, The space shuttle Discovery is on its way to a new home at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. There it will be on permanent display inside the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
The Endeavour will head to its new home at the California Science Center in Los Angeles when it completes its final voyage later this month.
The Atlantis, meanwhile, will remain in Florida at the Kennedy Space Center when it touches down for the last time later in 2011.
In all, twenty-one institutions from across the country were vying for a chance to land one of the retired shuttles. Those that do not receive one of the shuttles are likely to see other types of hardware as consolation, including full-seize shuttle replicas used for training.
