Officials at Dubai International Airport say they expect to handle 98.5 million passengers each year by 2020.
Although the airport currently ranks fourth in terms of international traffic, CEO Paul Griffiths recently told the AP that he expects the hub to knock London’s Heathrow Airport from the top spot within four or five years.
Rapid growth in recent years by Dubai-based airlines Emirates and FlyDubai backs up Griffiths’ intrepid predictions.
The city is also currently building a second airport which should start receiving passengers sometime in 2012. According to reports, the new Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International will be able to handle up to 160 million passengers each year.
