Los Angeles might not be the most obvious destination to enjoy a scenic river ride during a late summer afternoon. Upon mentioning LA, most folks think of gridlock, concrete, and crowded highways, not peace, quiet, and tranquil waters.
But environmentalists and city officials are hoping to change all your preconceptions of the city and the beleaguered river bearing its name.
Monday marked a historic moment in their cause, as the first group of kayakers in more than 30 years (legally) dipped their boats into the murky waters of the LA River. It’s all part of a pilot program aimed at making the gentle waterway more accessible to the surrounding communities.
Saturdays and Sundays, between August 13 and September 25, visitors will be able to enjoy canoeing and kayaking on a 1.5 mile stretch of the LA River. Equipment rentals will be available at an entrance point on the Balboa Boulevard footpath.
If the pilot program proves successful, the plan could be expanded to include many other parts of the waterway beginning next year.
