A recent industry report offers a glimpse at just how much social media has influenced the travel industry in the past few years.
According to the report, more airlines now have Twitter accounts than do loyalty programs. As of July 2011, a total of 191 airlines were on Twitter while only 179 carriers offered loyalty programs.
Airlines first burst onto the Twitter scene back in 2007 while the idea of loyalty programs has been around since the launch of American Airlines’ AAdvantage Program more than 30 years ago.
Airlines seem to be tweeting now more than ever. According to the report, the number of airline tweets increased 51% between March 2011 and July 2011.
Some of the biggest Twitter enthusiasts include JetBlue and Delta. Delta was the first major carrier to create a Twitter account while JetBlue now boasts more than 1.5 million followers.
