Visitors and locals in New York City will soon be able to use their cell phones beneath the streets of Manhattan in the city’s massive, century-old subway system.
An anonymous source leaked the news that the city’s long-awaited plan to bring sub-street level cell service will launch on Tuesday, September 27. The service will initially be available at six stations in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.
Signals will be available on the platform and mezzanine levels of each station and will only extend a short way into the tunnels. The company wiring the stations, Transit Wireless, plans to have all 271 stations cell phone ready within five years.
There is on catch for now: only AT&T and T-Mobile customers will be able to find a signal. Sprint and Verizon phones will be accommodated in the near future.
