NYC’s Central Park Could Lose 1,000 Trees to October Snow Storm

An October snowstorm that surprised the East Coast this weekend could cost New York City’s Central Park nearly 1,000 trees.

 

Heavy, wet snow and high winds created a perfect storm of destruction in the park Saturday with limbs snapping and roots giving way throughout the night.

 

Officials say that damage was compounded because most trees still had leaves on them, making them heavier than during a typical winter storm.

 

The pre-Halloween snow was some the earliest in New York City’s recorded history.

 

Clean-up crews are now working frantically to clear debris from the park ahead of the November 6 New York City Marathon.
