A proposed ban on plastic bottles is back on the table for the Grand Canyon, according a new report in USA Today.
A ban on bottles was originally set to go into effect in January before officials backtracked. At that time, many blamed Coca Cola for pressuring the National Parks Service to renege on the plan.
Coca Cola is a major supporter of the parks and also serves Dasani brand water at many of the sites. However, it now appears that a ban is imminent.
A new directive from the National Parks Service will allow individual parks to ban plastic bottles in 2012 as long as a regional director signs off on an impact analysis of such a ban.
Plastic bottles are said to make up 30% of the waste dumped at the Grand Canyon each year.
