The Louvre Remains World’s Most Visited Museum in 2011

The Louvre Museum in Paris remained the world’s most visited in 2011, attracting more than 8.8 million visitors.

 

The impressive figure marked a five percent increase over 2010, according to a report in the International Business Times.

 

Officials attributed the rise in attendance to the increasing number of foreigners visiting France. More visitors from countries like the United States, Brazil, Australia, and China especially helped to boost attendance.

 

The Louvre, which is home to Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” and dozens of other world famous works, easily beat out the British Museum and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art to retain its crown.
