$178 Million Guggenheim Museum Coming to Helsinki?

This blog post was updated on September 28, 2018.

A new proposal could soon land a $178 million Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki. The Finnish capital would become home to the world’s sixth Guggenheim institution.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation currently oversees the original museum in New York City as well as four others around the globe.

According to Reuters, foundation officials chose Helsinki for their next venture after conducting a year-long feasibility study.

While additional funding is still needed for the project, Foundation officials are urging officials to move forward with an architectural design competition to help expiate the process.

The city is set to make a final decision on funding the project in the coming weeks. If all goes according to plan, the museum could be open as early as 2018.
