Three Winter Festivals in Berlin

Berlin is a vibrant city with a rich cultural scene, which makes it a wonderful (albeit chilly) place to spend the winter months. If you are lucky enough to find yourself in Berlin this winter and are interested in immersing yourself in Berlin’s unique culture, here are a few festivals/events to check out:

Christkindlmarkets/Christmas Markets
Throughout the month of December, Christmas markets pop up all around the city. Come of the largest and most established Christmas markets include: the Charlottenburg Castle Christmas Market, the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market, the Potsdamer Platz Christmas Market, the Spandau Christmas Market, and the Kaiser-Wilhelm Memorial Church Christmas Market. At these markets, you can purchase traditional and modern handicrafts and enjoy Christmas treats like mulled wine and gingerbread. A Christmas market in Berlin is an unforgettable experience.
Internationale Grüne Woche/International Green Week
Berlin’s International Green Week is, above all, a celebration of culinary culture. In 2013, foodies will converge on Berlin from January 18th-27th (the festival always takes place for ten days in the middle of January). Food growers, chefs, and wine and beer producers gather in Charlottenburg for ten days of sheer gastronomic bliss. Berlin International Film Festival
One of the top film festivals in the world, the Berlin International Film Festival is a must for cinephiles. The 2013 dates are February 7th-17th (the festival always takes place for ten days in February). Films are screened at locations throughout the city, but the festival “hub” is definitely Potsdamer Platz. Take part in this historic festival that has been going on for 60 years (maybe you’ll even see some stars).
