Discovering Vancouver’s Art Scene

Visitors to Vancouver are often struck by the city’s beauty, including its mix of old and new architecture and well-designed public spaces. This penchant for aesthetics extends into the city’s interior spaces as well, making Vancouver an interesting destination for art lovers. Here are some of the city’s top art galleries:

Vancouver Art Gallery
750 Hornby Street, Vancouver
The largest gallery in Western Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery houses a collection of over 10,000 pieces and hosts various touring shows throughout the year. Artists represented in the permanent collection include: Jeff Wall, the Group of Seven, Emily Carr, and Marc Chagall. Located in Vancouver’s former courthouse, the Vancouver Art Gallery also comprises a first-rate café and research library that is open to the public.

Vancouver Contemporary Art Gallery
555 Nelson Street, Vancouver
The Vancouver Contemporary Art Gallery is a non-profit public art gallery dedicated to the research, exhibition, education and documentation of local and international contemporary visual art. In addition to housing an impressive permanent collection, the gallery also hosts rotating exhibitions throughout the year, as well as robust educational programming. Another unique facet of the gallery is the Abraham Rogatnick Library, which contains a collection of exhibition catalogues, monographs, ephemera and periodicals to support the gallery’s education programs and contemporary art research (it is open to the public by appointment).

Equinox Gallery
525 Great Northern Way, Vancouver
Run by Andy Sylvester, the Equinox modern and contemporary art gallery hosts a variety of impressive solo and retrospective shows throughout the year. Artists featured by the Equinox Gallery include well-known names such as Lesley Dill, Fred Herzog, Takao Tanabe, Roy Lichtenstein, and Eadweard Muybridge.

Harrison Galleries
901 Homer Street, Vancouver
The family owned and operated Harrison Galleries have been a staple of the Vancouver art community for over 50 years. The gallery represents both Canadian and international artists ranging in genre, from classical painting, to modern and abstract, to fine art photography. Some of the artists currently represented by the Harrison Galleries include: Don Berger, Chantal Julien, Andrew Briggs and Peter Wyse.
