Marvelous Milan, Italy

This blog post was updated on October 16, 2018.

I first visited Milan on my way to a writing conference in Lugano, Switzerland. On that trip, Milan was a city that I “passed through” twice on my way to and from the airport. Although I didn’t get to experience much of Milan, I could sense that it was a place I needed to get to know better. When I finally did several years later, I absolutely fell in love. In addition to experiencing the fantastic restaurants and high-end fashion boutiques, there are a variety of unforgettable sights you must see during your time in Milan.

La Scala
The La Scala opera house is located at the end of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in the stunning Scala Square. Once one of the most celebrated opera houses in the world, La Scala it has hosted the debuts of many of Italy’s most famous musicians and composers, including Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, Vincenzo Bellini, and Arturo Toscanini.

Castello Sforzesco
The beautiful and historic Castello Sforzesco is a castle that was originally built in the 14th century.  During the bombardment of Milan during World War II, the castle was badly damaged. It was reconstructed in the 1950s with the intention of turning it into a museum. Today, the castle houses some of Italy’s most cherished artistic treasures.

Duomo di Milano
One of the most famous sights is the Duomo di Milano, Milan’s cathedral. This impressive example of Gothic architecture took nearly five centuries to complete and is currently one of the largest churches in the world. I recommend taking the long walk up to the rooftop, where you can get an up close look at the multiple spires and statuettes (including the famous gilded bronze Madonna on the highest point), as well as breathtaking views of the city.

Buon viaggio!
