While it may not be Paris or New York, Chicago can certainly hold its own in terms of great designer boutiques. The last time I was in the windy city, I was pleased to see a focus on (and real enthusiasm for) “shopping local” and supporting independent boutiques. Here are my top three suggestions for boutiques that feature handmade goods (many of them created by local artists and desginers) in the Chicago metro area.
One Strange Bird
2124 W. Division St. Chicago, IL 60622
Half boutique/half art center, One Strange Bird is located in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. The boutique carries a variety of unique art, clothing, accessories, home decor, and bath and body products by local and national artists. The art center features classes taught by local artists. Shoppers can catch a glimpse of the artistic process at the on-site studio where artists are creating. One Strange Bird is also a social hotspot, hosting art openings and parties throughout the year. The boutique recently moved to its new Division Street location.
Milk Handmade
5137 N Clark St Chicago, IL 60640
Owned by fashion maven Hallie Borden, Milk Handmade features high-quality, fashionable clothing and accessories from Chicago and national designers. The store’s rustic décor and the employees’ friendly attitudes help to foster a comfortable, low-key shopping atmosphere. If you’re looking for a unique dress to wear to a special event, or some gorgeous accessories to spice up your wardrobe, Milk is sure to provide.
Virtu
2034 N. Damen Avenue Chicago IL 60647
Virtu is a sophisticated boutique offering handmade jewelry, ceramics, wood, textiles, metal, paper products and more. Beautifully curated, Virtu is the tupe of store where everything is captivating and nothing looks out of place. Virtu hosts trunk show events so that locals can meet the renowned national designers whose work is carried in the boutique. Looking for the perfect gift for the woman who has everything? Virtu’s got you covered.
