Minneapolis’s large art institutions (such as the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Art) are well known throughout the country. However, Minneapolis is also home to perhaps lesser-known (but no less impressive) smaller art galleries. Locals and tourists alike appreciate these creative spaces for the innovative, multidisciplinary work they promote. Here are five to check out the next time you’re in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
The Soap Factory
514 Second St. SE, Minneapolis
Located in the former Union Pacific Railways Storage Company building (which dates back to 1882), The Soap Factory is known for its commitment to both emerging and established artists’ work, especially those who explore the overlap of technology and art. In addition to its exhibitions and installations, The Soap Factory regularly hosts film festivals, literary readings, performances, and more.
Soo Visual Arts Center (SooVAC)
2638 Lyndale Ave. S., Minneapolis
One of the most welcoming and accessible galleries in Minneapolis, SooVAC is committed to showcasing the work of local artists (including many Minneapolis College of Art and Design graduates). This community-oriented space also has two Little Free Libraries in front where visitors can take or leave books, which reflects the SooVac’s inclusive, educational mission.
Franklin Art Works
1021 E. Franklin Ave., Minneapolis
The Franklin Art Works space still has the ornate façade of its former incarnation as a turn-of-the-century movie theater. Inside, it is filled with a diverse array of pieces from national artists working in a variety of media. It’s a captivating, well-curated space, to be sure.
All My Relations Gallery

Supported by the Native American Community Development Institute, All My Relations Gallery features exhibitions, lectures and workshops by locally and nationally-known Native American artists. Expect to find pieces that are as thought-provoking as they are visually stunning in this expertly curated space.
