Returning to London for its twelfth year this June is the More London Free Festival. All summer long this free outdoor festival takes place in and around The Scoop, a sunken riverside amphitheatre near the southern end of Tower Bridge. Running from the 4th of June until September 26th, this year’s More London Free Festival promises a “jam-packed programme of free music, dance, award-winning theatre, films and, this year for the first time, live tennis coverage from Wimbledon.” Here’s a quick roundup of all the activities to come:
Free Fringe
June 4 to 21
The festival will kick off with an “eclectic mix of music, dance, theatre and opera.” There’ll be street parties, Salsa lessons, plenty of all-ages fun and more.
More London Wimbledon Fortnight
June 23 to July 6
More London will create an “urban Murray Mound” at The Scoop where full coverage of the Championship will be shown on an LCD screen for the whole of Wimbledon.
Free Music
July 9 to 25
There’ll be free music and lots of it throughout July with lunchtime acoustic shows, jazz, blues, pop, soul, reggae, Latin, lounge, choirs and more in the evenings.
Free Theatre
August 6 to 31
Every Wednesday and Sunday in August, The Scoop’s award-winning resident company, Gods and Monsters Theatre, will present The Ring Cycle Plays. Adapted from Richard Wagner’s librettos and presented on this occasion without the operatic scores.
Free Film
September 3 to 26
In September, there’ll be four weeks of free open-air cinema every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night from 7:30 p.m. Screenings will include a mix of current, classic and cult movies, such as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The LEGO Movie, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and more.
For any More London event, don’t worry about booking ahead. Just show up in time to make yourself comfortable. Seats will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis and cannot be reserved. Cushions are available for hire. Attendees are welcome to bring their own picnic or buy hot or cold food and beverages from the many nearby cafes. However, it’s worth noting that no glass bottles or containers will be allowed.
The Scoop at More London is situated between HMS Belfast and Tower Bridge on the south bank of the River Thames. The nearest London Underground stations are at London Bridge and Tower Hill (across the river and accessible via Tower Bridge).
